Of all the events you’ve planned, do you have a favorite?
Planning the Schermerhorn Symphony Center Grand Opening was amazing. I started working at the Nashville Symphony before the building was built so opening night was very special. The event was complex with a symphony performance in the new facility then a separate seated dinner across the street in Hall of Fame Park. After dinner guests came back for dancing and dessert. It was an historic event for Nashville so that’s probably the most meaningful event I’ve ever planned.
Is an event planner really necessary or just an added expense?
When you are hosting an event, you want to spend time with your guests and let someone else worry about the details and any challenges that arise.
Corporate clients need to be able to network with their customers, employees, and prospects without worrying about the event timeline. Brides, grooms and their families need to be able to spend quality time with their guests without being pulled away to talk with the caterer, band, or photographer. Clients who have parties in their homes want to be able to enjoy the food, bar, and their friends without dealing with the valet, making sure the bar is stocked, and the music is perfect.

How would you describe your style?
My favorite events are sophisticated, elegant and timeless. I want my client to look back in 20 years and still see a beautiful event that they are proud of decades later. When you’re choosing a planner it’s an intimate relationship. We get close! It has to be the right style and fit. I feel like a member of the family sometimes before it’s over.
What is one tip you’d share on how to be a good client?
I think that being honest about budget and expectations is important. I always appreciate when a client shares their likes and dislikes so that I can ensure their vision becomes a reality on the event day.
For potential clients looking for an event planner, what should they ask event planners so they select the planner that’s the right fit?
Hiring an event planner becomes a personal relationship because the typical planning period is between six to 18 months. It is important to meet the planner and ensure that your personalities will work well together and that the vision for your event aligns with the planner’s style and can be executed successfully.
